Thrift store find: 1960s Phantom of the Opera gumball pinback

Found this little gem at an out-of-the-way shop during the Christmas holiday. It’s a one-inch Lon Chaney Phantom of the Opera pinback that came out of a gumball machine in the 1960s.

The side text reads: “Universal Pictures Inc. MFG by Elwar, Ltd., NYC, N.Y. – Printed in U.S.A.”

The button is part of a six-button set that included The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Wolf Man. You can read more about the set at Headpress.

On the one hand, I’ve always thought the Phantom of the Opera looked extra creepy. In the other hand, it did give us a look to go for when we played “Fun with Tape.”
