We were accompanying students on an assignment and somehow ended up following a community radio volunteer into a small alleyway neighborhood in Chennai.
This little one stared at us curiously, and when the camera was offered, she showed off her pretty dress.
What struck me about this her was her refusal to show emotion as the group stopped to look at her. She definitely was not shy, but she refused to smiled. She was in control of the situation. She knew she belonged there and we didn’t; therefore, she had nothing to fear.
I think that fierce confidence shows in her stare.
I was fortunate to meet her and her whole neighborhood, which went out of its way to make us feel welcome.
