Johnny Cash: ‘Heart of Gold’

Speaking of cover songs that are better than the original, here’s another one.

Here’s the kicker: this Neil Young song has always been a favorite of mine. However, ever since I heard this Johnny Cash version (on disc two of the Unearthed box set), I’ve gravitated towards it.

I’m not sure why, though it may have to do with Cash’s weary old voice booming through the lyrics (unlike Young’s whisper-falsetto), which gives the song more authority. (Blah, blah, blah … insert your own analysis here).

What do you think?

By the way, I’ve gotten a lot of a good suggestions of cover songs that are better than the original. Keep them coming.
