What do you do? Do you wake her and let her know you’re home (and risk the possibility that she doesn’t want to be awakened or can’t fall back asleep)? Or do you leave her (and have her find you comfortably in bed while she rubs an aching back from the cramped couch)?
To wake, or not to wake? That is the question.
The answer: Neither.
Make enough noise to stir the infant and then sit back and wait. When the infant’s noise stirs your wife, quietly approach her and say, “I got it.” Go soothe the child back to sleep. Your wife, meanwhile, will slowly wake and realize that you have selflessly, heroically swept in to take care of the “upset” child, leaving her to go to bed.
She’ll fall asleep thinking of your sacrifice.
You can thank me later.
