Saw the suprisingly funny Cop Out recently. It was really a lot better than I expected … which says one (or more) of the following three things:
- it was late when I saw it
- I had low expectations to begin with
- it was actually funny
Here’s what you get: Take the musical soundtrack of Eddie Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop, and reverse the dynamic of Lethal Weapon (Bruce Willis plays the “serious” role, while Tracy Morgan is the “off-the-wall” one). The writing isn’t the best and Kevin Smith lets the actors play a bit (Po Boy is nothing more than a caricature of a copy or a stereotype). Shake well.
You get the idea.
The “climax” even features the old Lethal Weapon-esque “Do you mean 1, 2, 3 and then shoot or do we shoot on 3?” which seemed like a play on the bathroom explosion scene in the first Lethal Weapon.
Sean William Scott, while playing the Joe Pesci role in our Lethal Weapon scenario, was the funniest part, although as he was delivering his lines, it seemed the role was written for someone else:
That’s right: Sean William Scott IS Jack Black. He’s a bit older and filled out now … with his ragged look in the movie, he resembled Jack Black. And now that I saw this movie, I can’t believe I haven’t seen it all along.
Could Jack Black play any of the Sean William Scott roles?
Couldn’t Jack Black pull off Dude Where’s My Car?
Could Sean William Scott pull off Orange County?
Maybe. I’ll have to rewatch some movies to find out. But, then again, that may be a little off topic …
