James Bond Autograph Card

Pulled this autograph card from a new Rittenhouse James Bond 50th Anniversary pack the other day. It’s the third James Bond-type autograph I’ve pulled, though this is the most recognizable actor.

It’s Jeroen Krabbe, who played General Georgi Koskov in The Living Daylights. I never saw the movie (don’t judge), but I remember Krabbe as the bad guy from Harrison Ford’s The Fugitive. He was also in Jumpin’ Jack Flash … but since only five people saw that movie, I don’t expect you to know that. And Deuce Bigelow.

Anyway, what’s interesting about Mr. Krabbe is that if you type his name into a search engine, you’ll find an article saying that he has died in a snowboard incident. I doubt the veracity of the report, considering the date range for the accident is anywhere from April 3, 2012 to May 25, 2012. I also doubt the veracity, since the originating source, Global Associated News, carries this tagline at the bottom of its pages:

about this web site. FAKE… THIS STORY IS 100% FAKE! this is an entertainment website, and this is a totally fake article based on zero truth and is a complete work of fiction for entertainment purposes! this story was dynamically generated using a generic ‘template’ and is not factual. Any reference to specific individuals has been 100% fabricated by web site visitors who have created fake stories by entering a name into a blank ‘non-specific’ template for the purpose of entertainment. Questions or Comments about this fake news article?

The big question I have is this: this is entertainment? Why say someone has died? Why Jeroen Krabbe? Is it just so random that people will believe it to be true? After all, if it were someone with more name recognition, the story would easily be falsified. But choose someone whose face is recognizable, but whose name is not? Totally believable.

Does this mean everything you read on the Internet may not be true?!?

Sigh. You just can’t trust in anything anymore.

Except this card. Which is cool. And it makes me feel a little lucky.

And a lot nerdy.

Zing goes the Lantern

I have to admit, I never read a lot of Green Lantern growing up. To me, he was just a guy who could make shapes out of light.

However, as I read him now in DC’s Justice League, he’s pretty much the comic relief. Maybe this comic relief style is on the heels of the Ryan Reynolds movie (which refused to take itself too seriously), or maybe Hal Jordan has always been a bit of a cocky wise-cracker, either way, it fits.

I guess that makes Green Lantern the DC equivalent of Spider-Man, who is always quick with the quip.

Which begs this question: who’s a bigger wise-cracker: Green Lantern or Spider-Man?

Busted for being the poser that I am

Found myself in the checkout line at the local library Saturday, sporting my $3.99 Gap Outlet Green Lantern tee.

I handed my books and CD to the librarian.

“I see you’re wearing the shirt,” he said with a grin, “but do you know the oath?”

“Uhhh,” I muttered, “To protect and serve … ?”

He cut me off, and, not looking at me, shuffled through the stack of books and spoke:

“In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might, beware my power: Green Lantern’s light.”

He smiled.

“And,” he added, “these are due back April 21.”

Busted.

So here’s where Nerd Ethics come to play: Should I not wear the shirt again until I learn the oath, or find a new library?

Awesome of the Day: Daily T-shirt

I like t-shirts. I like pop culture creativity. Needless to say, I really like this shirt. If I were more of a Star Wars fan, I’d think about getting it.

But alas … It is awesome though.

Available for a short-time here. I’d tell you more about the artist, but when you click on the link at Ript Apparel, you get an error message. Or maybe it’s just me.

Nerd news: X-Men Archives Sketch Card

Pulling a sketch card is like hitting that one great golf shot in a round of otherwise unmemorable golf: it keeps you coming back.

Found this little gem in a pack of Rittenhouse’s X-Men Archives cards. I like the quality of Rittenhouse cards, so I bought a five-pack lot off eBay recently and, much to my surprise, this appeared.

To be honest, I have no clue which X-Man this is (I believe it’s Iceman, but, since I don’t follow the comic that pretty much means nothing to me). However, I did a little research and the artist is Daniel Brandao. It was pretty easy to find, considering the unique signature/logo. He did 147 difference sketch cards for the set, which seems about average. But that’s about all I know. Anyone know more about this guy?

Here’s his site (it’s in Spanish, so feel free to tell me what it means!). Here’s some more of his sketch cards from the X-Men Archives set. And, finally, here’s some information and a list of different artists who drew sketch cards for the set.
