Awesome of the Day: Retro t-shirt

A Cap’n Crunch Retro T-shirt for proofs of purchase plus shipping and handling? Yes, please.

I like the fact that the box says “Grown-up sizes only.” It really sends the message that this is an adult cereal.

I’d also like to go ahead and apologize to my wife, who will roll her eyes when she sees that we’re already halfway to getting our first shirt! (It was buy-one, get-one free, after all!) I should probably also apologize to my diet and my wardrobe. It may be a rough couple of months …

Free mp3: I’m From Barcelona

Now that it’s summer, it’s time for the bouncy, happy music to fill our poolside playlists.

Here, to fit that bill, is I’m From Barcelona with their single “Always Spring,” which is free today at Amazon.

I don’t know anything about the band, other than there’s a lot of people in it and their from Sweden. And that this is a really, really fun song … and not just because it’s free, either.

Download it now, while there’s still a lounge chair at the pool available.

Distractions: ‘The Johnny Cash Project’

If you haven’t seen The Johnny Cash Project lately, take some time to do it.The project, which was featured in this CNN story, is a collection of digital art frames created by users and set to the Johnny Cash song “Ain’t No Grave.”

The beauty of the project is its evolution.

The video changes each day as users create new frames. The frames are created on the site and require little or no experience to use (though, I would say, the more experienced you are at a program like Photoshop or Illustrator, the more realistic [or abstract] you can make your frame.

Seeing as I have little experience with either, I’m left with the above frame.

Viewing the video is an evolutionary experience, too, with options for seeing the music set to the highest-rated slides, director-curated slides, most brushstrokes per frame, most recent, random, pointillism, sketchy, or abstract frames.

Choosing a frame can take time, but that’s part of teh fun.

So, as you sit there during the work day wanting to look busy, here’s your opportunity.

This seems like a unique way to keep an artist’s memory alive. With that in mind, what other artsits/songs should get a public art treatment?

A back-page time capsule

Recently discovered a 1981 comic book and found this on the back:

If you’re of a certain age, this was a ubiquitous sight. Advertisements to sell Grit, seeds, subscriptions and, in this case, stationary from the Olympic Sales Club, of Enfield, Connecticut.

Looking at the treasure trove of prizes on the back is like looking inside a time capsule. To put it into perspective, this comic book was released a year before the first compact disc was commercially available. (Ouch!)

Considering that a person earned $1 per item sold, you can also get an idea of the prices of things back then. Most expensive item? Magnovox Solid State Portable TV (75 items). Cheapest? Zipper Carry-All Bag or Deluxe Uno Card Game (both for 7 items). Here’s some other notables:

  • Electric football game (13 items)
  • Star Wars Talking Alarm Clock (22 items)
  • G.E. Cassette recorder (24 items)
  • Kodak “Fairy Time” Instant Color Camera (17 items)
  • AM/FM Pocket Radio (11 items) … or, if you’re a more private person, the Head Hugger radio (also 11 items).

On the one hand, it seems that this company tried to take advantage of a young, untapped work force, something that would never fly in this day and age.

On the other hand, it seems like a short trip from the back of this comic book to the current climate of entrepreneurs, self-starters, and people starting Internet businesses on the side for residual income.

Does anyone else remember these ads? Anyone ever respond to them? Do programs like this still exist?

Free mp3: Cold Cave

Here’s a song for the happy moper in all of us.

Cold Cave‘s “The Great Pan is Dead” is a mash of 80s synth, aggro-industrial, and just enough goth to make you feel good about your own life … which is exactly why you should download it now for free at Amazon.
